MODERN-DAY RENOIR?

MODERN-DAY RENOIR?

When Cousin Jenny posted a picture on Facebook showing her husband pouring wine for her as they celebrated their sixth wedding anniversary with a romantic dinner, I viewed it as a master’s painting. See my blog post from June 27, 2022, 100 Years - A Wrap,   for more about Jenny.

Jenny and Pavlo married on November 6, 2016, in Brooklyn. We danced the night away. Fast forward, and they are living in Connecticut, the parents of a toddler.

Do you see what I see? That piece strikes me as a statement of modern impressionist art, with Jenny holding a cell phone instead of a hand fan. In this day and age, Jenny, a medical doctor and a mother, “needs” her cell phone, plus the sophisticated camera on it comes in handy for snapping such photos.

The prior era of paintings would more likely have a woman clutching a handheld decorative fan. Possibly someone would be puffing tobacco.

My Facebook comment to Jenny was, “you should have an artist paint this.” She responded with an emoji of laughter, but I replied, “Seriously.”

I can visualize an artist’s rendition in the Whitney or the Metropolitan Museum of Art, exemplifying how life has changed in the 21st Century while still exhibiting stolid beauty. Your thoughts?
